A lot of models and aspiring models are looking for ways to improve their portfolio. It seems easy to just answer an ad and get amazing shots the next day. It is possible it could be that easy but there are some things I need all new models to look out for.
1.Get a Model Mayhem Account!
Model Mayhem is great for networking. It is the ultimate connector between models and photographers. It is free and very active. They make sure to verify you and if you keep communication on their site they will monitor for any creeps out there.
2. Find Photographers in your area.
Using Model Mayhem, MeetUp, or craigslist, you can find the local photographers who are also looking to build their portfolio. This means you could be asked to shoot what they need in their portfolio. For example, wedding shots, budior, portraits etc. I would only work with serious photographers and I determined that by visiting their web pages. If their social media and website have a lot of content and interaction, I will trust that they aren't just some person with a camera trying to meet with pretty girls.
3. Make the perfect request.
In order to create the perfect request we need these things: Photos (no selfies if possible), contact information, stats (weight, height, size), and your personal message.
This information is basic for a paid audition as well as a free shoot. The photographer needs to have a good idea of what they want for their portfolio and it saves time and frustration to put as much helpful information included as possible.
4. Bring a friend!
Bringing a friend helps you feel more comfortable with a photographer if it is your first time meeting. If you feel like your friend will be a distraction and hurt the shoot, I still recommend asking if the photographer will allow a friend to come. Sometimes just knowing that they have no problem with a friend coming can bring a lot of peace of mind.
5. Ask for raw images
If you want to build your portfolio it is best to agree with the photographer about how you will receive your images. Some photographers will only offer a couple of edited photos in exchange for your time and permission to use the photos. But if you want a wider range of photos to choose from and the chance to use one shoot for even more portfolio additions, then you should request a thumbdrive, memory stick, Dropbox or Google Photos access to all photos that were taken. This may be hundreds to thousands of photos so be patient
